  • Dementia/other cognitive impairment – where there are resistive behaviours to being showered.
  • Residents who pose manual handling risks or who suffer hyperalgesia
  • Frail, bed bound residents who are unable to shower without experiencing emotional or physical discomfort.

Other potential outcomes achieved in aged care nursing homes (using HiCare™ Bath):

NB: In comparison to hospitals, there will be a greater percentage of the overall nursing home population suffering damaged tissue integrity – the same could equally be said about those presenting as manual handling risks.

  • Residents with cognitive impairment displaying resistive behaviours when attempting a shower will usually display a more favourable reception to being bathed with HiCare Bath (no water over the head). Potentially less injuries will also prevail as a result!
  • Improvements in resident care and comfort. (If a resident is fully able to go to the shower without suffering emotional and/or physical distress, they should continue to do so.) Some residents may suffer from physical lifting or hyperalgesia and therefore would potentially benefit from the use of HiCare™ Bath.
  • Real improvements in resident skin integrity (versus the sponge bath). This may extend to clinical issues such as skin tears, excoriation etc. The enhancement of high dependency resident tissue can in fact not only reduce personal distress and suffering but also reduce the costs to manage skin impairment - these savings could be construed to be very significant in some cases! There may also be positives from reduced infection as a result of enhanced tissue integrity!
  • Due to the shortage of nursing labour, any savings in high dependency bathing time is going to have a highly beneficial and significant impact on the further enhancement of care levels based on using the same labour time. Staff will see productivity gains first hand!
  • Enhancements in palliative care due to efficiencies and clinical positives surrounding improvements in resident skin integrity.
  • Changing from the sponge bath protocol to HiCare™ Bath will more likely help in a quest to achieve Accreditation. .
